Mitchell Falls

This was one of the places I was looking forward to the most, and it didn't disappoint. The falls themselves are spectacular, on a scale it's hard to photographs or describe. The 2 hour ( very slow) walk in just added to the amazement when we got to the top of the Falls, and the helicopter ride back was just fun.

Merten Falls, close to camp

Greater Merten Falls, you can't swim at the bottom due to crocodiles and Aboriginal beliefs about an ancestral snake living there, maybe the crocodiles have been there for a while ?

The Falls themselves, but this really doesn't give any indication of the scale. I'd love to see this in the Wet, it would be an incredible amount of water.

The walk into the Falls is rough, but walking slowly is not a problem when the scenery is stunning. We walked along dry grassland, through pandanus trees, along lush river banks, and the couple of rock art sites were not marked but well worth the short side trips. The serenity of the lily pond was unexpected, in such a dry landscape.

There's a simple campsite, toilets but nothing else. It's so peaceful here, and we've been lucky with our timing as we're well before the holiday crowds so there aren't many people around. This was our bathing spot.

A very welcome cool and shaded swimming spot, after a day of driving and walking

Cool and peaceful
